Am I the only person who didn’t know a mint julep was made with bourbon?! How did I miss this? I’m a huge fan of the Kentucky Derby (especially the fashions), so it would seem likely that I would know how to prepare their classic mint julep. I set out to create this traditional drink and of course I had to add a berry twist to our version ;)
Using a classic mint julep cup (a must!) I muddled fresh strawberries with sugar and mint, which smelled absolutely incredible and fragrant. The sweet strawberries combined with the bourbon is perfect for those of us who don’t like their drink too strong (like me!).
Have you ever attended the Kentucky Derby?! I’d love to hear about your experience! Would you make these strawberry mint juleps over the classic drink? Sound off in the comments below!
Ingredients (makes one drink)
3 large California Giant strawberries
Few sprigs of mint
2 teaspoons sugar
2 ounces bourbon
Splash of club soda
Crushed ice
Instructions
In a mint julep cup, muddle two of the strawberries, mint and sugar until fragrant. Add bourbon and club soda. Top with crushed ice and stir. Top with a sprig of mint and remaining strawberry.
