Few things scream Halloween like creepy, crawly, spooky critters! I don’t know about you, but when it comes to Halloween, I say the creepier, the better. It is, after all, a holiday dedicated to fright and fear.
What better way is there to celebrate than by whipping up some scary berries for your family, a party, an office function or teacher gifts? Your friends and family may be a little creeped out at first – especially when they see you eat a spider – but they will love every one of these scary berries.
The strawberries in each of these recipes are either dipped or covered in melted chocolate. To save yourself some time and effort, you could actually melt the amount of chocolate you need for all three recipes in one bowl at the same time. Just be sure to leave the chocolate over the heat to keep it from hardening.
To create the worms, you’ll cut your gummy worms, then poke a hole in each berry with a chopstick, a wooden skewer or a small straw. Insert your cut worm into the hole. Dip the berry in melted chocolate, then in ground up cookie crumbs.
The mummies are made with marzipan. Roll the marzipan flat between two sheets of waxed paper or parchment paper, then slice into small strips. Dip your berries in melted chocolate and wrap the marzipan strips around each berry. Role one strip of marzipan into two balls and use them for the mummy’s eyes. Reserve some strips of marzipan to use as eyes on the spiders.
To make the spiders, cut strips of black lace licorice. Poke four holes in each side of your strawberry with a chop stick, wooden skewer or small straw. Insert one licorice lace in each hole. Cover the strawberry with melted chocolate and sprinkle with cocoa powder. Roll your reserved marzipan strips into little balls and use them as eyes for your spiders.
